St. Jude Nursery & Primary Day & Boarding School in Kikondo-Kyotera, Uganda

We support  currently 402 young children from poor families in the area of Kikondo-Kyotera near Masaka in Uganda, by securing and optimizing a school project togehter with Jude Kayiwa, the founder of the school.

Fresh Water from a school owned well

Until now, the school children had to draw the water they needed for school from a far away waterhole and carry it to school in canisters on their heads, crossing a busy road. The water drawn in this way was not clean enough. With the support of the Foundation "Solidarity and Justice" Our Agenda - Foundation Solidarity and Justice (www.stiftungsolidaritaet.de) and thanks to many donors, we were able to raise the funds for digging and constructing a school-owned drinking water well on the school grounds. A company from Masaka specialised in well construction dug a well and installed an elevated tank on it within a month. The well can produce up to 5,000l of fresh water per day. As far as the water is not needed for daily washing and cooking in the school, it can be used in the future for an agricultural farm that is to be built for the school. The surrounding population will also be able to benefit from this new source of fresh water. The 402 school children are thrilled. They and we thank all supporters from the bottom of our hearts.

St. Jude Nursery & Primary Day and Boarding School Kikondo-Kyotera/Masaka, Uganda

Since our trip to Tanzania/Uganda in November 2022, we have been supporting the St. Jude Nursery & Primary Day and Boarding School in Kikondo-Kyotera, approx. 30 km southwest of Masaka/Uganda. The school was founded in 2019 by Jude Kayiwa to give 118 children from poor families, who are usually unable to pay school fees, the opportunity to receive a proper education. The school has defined as its goal to educate young citizens with proper social behavior equipped with knowledge, skills and values for a sustainable life. Its vision is holistic education for sustainable development. In the 4 years since its inception, the number of students has grown to over 400, of which about 120 live in the school as boarders during school hours. During our visit in November 2022, we took the children into our hearts as much as they took us into theirs. As a sign of a planned long-term partnership, we planted an avocado tree on the school grounds. However, we also saw that there is a lot to be done to the school's very sparse facilities. One of the first tasks to be tackled was to ensure that the school has a clean source of drinking water. Until now, the schoolchildren have been fetching unclean water in jerry cans from a water point a few hundred meters away from the school. In the fall of 2023, the time had come. Together with the Solidarity & Justice Foundation from Eberdingen, the school was able to build its own drinking water well on the school grounds, which produces up to 5,000 liters of clean drinking water per day. Together with a 10,000-liter cistern, in which water that is not needed during the day is stored as a reserve, the school's water requirements are covered. Families living in the surrounding area can draw surplus water from the well system at a tapping point installed outside the school grounds. In February 2024, the well system was officially handed over to the school in our presence.

Shortly afterwards, we were able to take a further development step by financing the school's own minibus to transport pupils during the day. Especially during the rainy season, it was hardly possible for many children, who live up to 5 km away from the school, to get to school and back home every day. Continuous school attendance was therefore often not possible for these children. With the school's own bus, this is no longer a problem.
With our financial support, the classroom buildings were completely renovated during the major vacations after the 2024 school year. Roofs were renewed, windows were replaced or installed for the first time and the facades of the buildings were renovated.

The latest development is the construction of a new sanitary station on the school grounds. We have received a grant of € 25,000 from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for this. We are financing the necessary own contribution together with the Hans Mendel Foundation from Wernau/Baden-Württemberg. At the end of this school year at the beginning of December 2025, the existing sanitary building will be demolished and replaced by a completely new one with modern standards for washing facilities and toilets. The waste will be processed into agricultural fertilizer after suitable treatment. Following the construction of the new building, hygiene education will be carried out at the school for an entire school year with specially trained mentors as part of the “Clean makes you healthier” project, the results of which will also be passed on to the schoolchildren's families.
